For us, this is one of our favorite ways to see the world. Why? Because we’ve lived it ourselves in two of the planet’s most extraordinary destinations: Antarctica and the Galápagos Islands.

Our own introduction to expedition cruising came in Antarctica in 2017, and it was nothing short of life-changing, especially for two people who aren’t necessarily fond of cold weather.
Imagine standing on the deck as your ship sails into the Lemaire Channel, its mirrored waters reflecting towering ice cliffs that glow in soft pink light. Other days, you climb into Zodiacs to land on remote beaches where penguin colonies bustle with life. At dawn, you slip into a kayak to paddle alongside icebergs, the only sounds the dip of your paddle and the distant crack of glaciers shifting. Even when you’re not on shore, you are gliding through icebergs, sipping champagne, awaiting the captain’s announcement that the naturalists have spotted whales, which begins the unplanned detour for a closer look.
On days when you make landings, your day doesn’t just end when you return to your ship. A warm welcome awaits, along with a perfectly prepared meal, a glass of wine, and a sense of profound awe and conversations with other travelers’ experiences from the day. It’s a balance of rugged exploration and refined comfort that is simply unmatched.
Galápagos: A Living Laboratory 🐢
The Galápagos Islands offer a completely different but equally captivating expedition experience. Here, every island feels like a world of its own. On one, you may find giant tortoises lumbering across lava fields, creating the feel of another planet. On another, sea lions spin playfully around you as you snorkel in crystalline waters. Blue-footed boobies perform their whimsical mating dance, marine iguanas lounge on black rocks, and finches dart overhead—the very wildlife that inspired Darwin’s theory of evolution.
